Select the 4.3-inch resolution
The product listing combines 480 × 272 and 800 × 480 options. For the Sunton reference family, the rear model distinguishes these panels; confirm it before choosing an example.
| Printed reference family | Resolution | Touch suffix |
|---|---|---|
| ESP32-4827S043 | 480 × 272 | C capacitive / R resistive / N non-touch |
| ESP32-8048S043 | 800 × 480 | C capacitive / R resistive / N non-touch |
The Sunton S043 definitions referenced here target ESP32-S3 RGB boards. If your module actually says ESP32-WROOM-32, request that revision’s schematic and example rather than selecting an S3 target from the listing title.
Choose a board environment
| Reference variant | Environment |
|---|---|
| 480 × 272 capacitive | esp32-4827S043C |
| 480 × 272 resistive | esp32-4827S043R |
| 800 × 480 capacitive | esp32-8048S043C |
| 800 × 480 resistive | esp32-8048S043R |
N-suffix environments are available for non-touch models. The linked profile is a reference, not confirmation of a board lacking this identifier.
First power-on and USB check
Use a USB data cable. Photograph the working factory screen before replacing its firmware. Connect without extra wiring, identify the new serial port and use the USB checklist if no port appears.
A serial-only sketch checks programming independently of the display. Set the monitor to 115200 baud; it is not a screen test.
void setup() {
Serial.begin(115200);
delay(1000);
Serial.println("ESP32S: serial connection OK");
}
void loop() { delay(1000); }
Run a matching RGB demonstration
Follow the PlatformIO workflow and keep the selected board’s driver, RGB timings and memory configuration. Test the display before adding touch or a custom interface. Changing only width and height does not convert one panel profile into another.
Capacitive S043 reference pins
| Signal / configuration | Reference value |
|---|---|
| Backlight GPIO | 2 |
| HSYNC GPIO | 39 |
| VSYNC GPIO | 41 |
| DE GPIO | 40 |
| Pixel clock GPIO | 42 |
| Touch SDA GPIO | 19 |
| Touch SCL GPIO | 20 |
| Touch interrupt GPIO | 18 |
For the two named capacitive reference profiles these control pins match, but resolution and timing settings differ. Read the complete profile for your panel; do not replace its data-pin list with this abbreviated table.
Display and touch acceptance checklist
- Confirm that the demo fills the expected screen area and shows distinct colors.
- Test the center and all four corners. Record rotation and touch-coordinate errors separately.
- For resistive touch, run the project calibration procedure and save the results for that rotation.
- For capacitive touch, confirm controller detection, then check coordinate transforms.
- Reset once after disconnecting the serial monitor and confirm normal startup.
Troubleshoot resolution and timing
A clipped image usually requires checking the selected resolution, logical rotation and UI canvas. Flicker, repeated rows or an unstable picture require checking RGB timing and buffer settings. Compare the known-good demo and your modified project one change at a time.
Firmware upload and recovery
Prefer the project upload command, which uses its generated bootloader, partition table and application layout. For a downloaded binary, follow the release manifest rather than assuming an offset or reusing another board’s firmware.
If connection fails, lower upload speed, close other serial programs and follow the board’s BOOT/RESET procedure. After reset, read the serial log before changing display settings. See the firmware flashing guide.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Next check |
|---|---|
| Backlight on, screen blank | Check controller, board profile and display interface before editing application code. |
| Image shifted or unstable | For RGB panels, verify timing and memory settings from the selected profile. |
| Touch does not respond | Check the touch variant and controller independently of the display. |
| Build fails after updating libraries | Restore the project’s pinned dependencies and matching LVGL major version. |
| Upload succeeds but board resets | Read the exception log and confirm target chip, flash layout and PSRAM settings. |
