ESP32-P4 Display Not Working? A Blank-Screen Checklist

A blank ESP32-P4 display is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A dark panel, a lit white screen and a frozen graphic point to different stages of the system. Start with the board supplier's matching example, then establish which stage is working before changing the application.

Quick symptom map

  • No backlight: inspect power, cable orientation and backlight control.
  • Backlight on, no image: inspect reset, panel initialization and display timing.
  • Test pattern works, LVGL does not: inspect the display port, buffers and refresh handling.
  • Image works, touch does not: inspect the separate touch interface.

1. Match the board, panel and connector

A connector that fits mechanically does not establish electrical compatibility. Check the panel model, interface, pin assignment and board revision. Distinguish MIPI DSI display connections from MIPI CSI camera connections. Disconnect power before reseating a ribbon cable, and verify the contact orientation from the board documentation.

2. Start with the documented software baseline

Use the supplier's board package and display example before migrating framework versions. Record the target chip, flash size and PSRAM configuration. A successful firmware upload proves communication with the processor; it does not prove that panel configuration matches the attached screen.

3. Check boot logs before changing GUI code

Save the serial log from reset through initialization. Look for repeated resets, allocation failures and panel-driver errors. If the board restarts when the backlight turns on, investigate its power path and supply before treating the issue as a graphics bug. Reduce the application to a display test rather than disabling error checks.

4. Separate the backlight from image generation

The backlight can work while the panel receives no valid image. Check its enable pin and active level independently, then confirm panel reset and initialization. For a known panel, a solid-color test provides a simpler milestone than a complete interface with fonts, images and touch events.

5. Bring LVGL in after a basic image works

Keep the LVGL version aligned with the example and board port. If a static test succeeds but GUI rendering fails, inspect buffer allocation, the flush path and completion notifications. Do not assume that sample code for an SPI display will drive a DSI panel without a different hardware and software path.

6. Treat touch as its own peripheral

A visible picture does not validate touch wiring. Verify the touch controller, reset sequence, interrupt and communication pins separately. Once raw touch coordinates are available, check rotation and coordinate mapping. Avoid changing panel timings to solve a touch-coordinate problem.

ESPP4-A DevKit: use the board-specific reference

For the ESPP4-A DevKit sold here, use the documented ST7102 panel setup and the matching touch configuration, rather than generic ESP32 display pins. The package includes module-only, board-only and display-kit choices: confirm which hardware you ordered. The setup guide contains the schematic, software package and memory-configuration notes.

What to send when asking for help

Provide the board revision, panel marking, software version, selected memory option, boot log and a photo of the ribbon-cable connection. Say whether the backlight turns on and whether a basic color test works. Those details narrow the problem far more than “the screen is blank.”
